“Put the money in the bag!” the child says calmly. “Are you serious?” asks the cashier. After then, the boy is seen firing a round into the ceiling. The woman behind the counter flinches at first, then rapidly withdraws a bag of cash from the safe. She hands it to the youngster and tells him to “go out.”
While departing, the boy tries to reload his gun, but it jams. One of the shell casings breaks and lands on the ground. He then walks quietly away. 911 dispatchers received a call shortly after the event about an armed robbery at the Marathon gas station on East Main Street. The police station is only a block away from the gas station. Soon later, the boy was apprehended by police.

In Van Buren County Family Court this week, the boy was arrested without incident by Hartford Police Chief Tressa Beltran and charged with armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharge of a pistol. According to officers, the child told a classmate about his plan to commit the armed robbery. He is said to have taken the weapon from his grandfather’s locked safe. The boy’s granddad said he had no idea the boy had access to the safe.

Hartford Middle School is where the child attends. He is currently being held at the Allegan County Juvenile Center and will remain there until a hearing later this month.
Jessica, the store clerk, told News Channel 3: “I assumed he was a kid, not even 10 years old.” He sounded far too composed. Until I heard the gun go off, I genuinely believed it was a joke. Part of me wanted to hug the boy since he has so many issues, but it’s difficult to feel sorry for him when he does something like this. I’ve always assumed that if I’m robbed, I’ll hand over the cash; no amount of money is worth my life.”
At this job, I’m learning something new every day. For the past 38 years, I’ve worked as a full-time police officer. “What astounded me the most was that he showed no emotion,” said Hartford Lt. Mike Prince. “He said he wasn’t doing it for the money.” He claimed he would have flushed the money down the toilet. He refused to offer us an explanation for what he had done.”

Police were chastised for apparently failing to intervene quickly enough to halt the shooting and save the victims. An off-duty Customs and Border Protection agent from an elite tactical team shot and killed Ramos.
