Yeardley Love Murder was murdered by George Huguely, an infamous serial murderer, on May 3, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, out of hatred and envy.

George Huguely, in particular, was a member of the men’s lacrosse squad at the University of Virginia (UVA).

Yeardley Love’s mother files a lawsuit in Virginia, and George Huguely V, who is serving time for her murder, testifies.

In a wrongful death case, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player testified Wednesday that the only mental memory he has of his ex-death girlfriend is blood flowing out of her nose and that he doesn’t recall breaking into her room and leaving her gravely injured.

In the case filed by Sharon Love, George Huguely V, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 shooting of his on-again, off-again lover Yeardley Love, a member of the Virginia women’s lacrosse team, testified. Yeardley’s mother is the executrix of her daughter’s estate, and she is seeking $29.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages in her case.

Huguely was only due to appear in court on Wednesday after an earlier judgment ruled he didn’t have the right to attend every day of the trial.

Huguely, who was dressed in a plain white button-down shirt, blue trousers, shoulder-length hair, and a short, cropped beard, told Paul Bekman, the Loves’ attorney, that he remembered very little owing to his extensive drinking, according to The Daily Progress of Charlottesville.

“I was drinking a lot all the time, all the way from my freshman year to my senior year,” said Huguely, who grew up in Chevy Chase and attended Landon. “I was drinking all the time. It was out of control.”

Drank over the weekend

Huguely claimed he drank regularly and extensively over the weekend of Love’s murder, leaving him with little memory of the night of May 2, 2010, and the early morning of May 3. Huguely compared his recollection to a slideshow, claiming that 98 percent of the slides had been deleted. He claimed he had no recollection of breaking into her room, injuring her externally, and fatally injuring her skull.

Much of the testimony centered on an email exchange that began with Love apologizing. Huguely retaliated with an enraged note full of obscenities and the suggestion that Love, a Cockeysville native, and Notre Dame Prep alumna, had * with another guy in order to harm him. In answer to Love, Huguely replied in one of the final emails in the exchange, “I should have murdered you.” Huguely clarified that he did not intend the statement to be taken literally.

Matthew Green, Huguely’s lawyer, discussed the defendant’s time in jail, which included completing alcohol and drug treatment programs. When he was convicted, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison, and he is currently nearly halfway through his term.

Apologized for killing

Huguely turned to Love’s mother and sister near the end of his evidence and apologized for killing her.

“I miss her and think about her every day and I would do anything to take back that night,” he said. “I take responsibility for what happened to her and I should have never gone over to her apartment that night.”

Sharon Love filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2012, but it was voluntarily abandoned when court orders concluded that Huguely was not eligible for coverage under his family’s $6 million homeowners insurance policy.

In 2018, a new complaint was filed that eliminated the negligence claims but added a claim that Huguely’s assault and the battery were the proximate cause of Love’s death. According to the lawsuit, Huguely behaved “with genuine malice” and in “knowing disdain for Love’s safety and life, thereby willfully causing Love’s injuries” because of the physical force he employed and his refusal to act by leaving her bleeding, damaged, and without medical assistance.
