Rockstar Games announced in February that the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise was in development.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has revealed some potential details about the upcoming game in a new report, citing people familiar with the development of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Grand Theft Auto VI will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time in the series. The woman, who is Latino, is one of two main characters in a story that sources say was influenced by bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde.

Developers are also careful not to make fun of marginalized groups. Rockstar has carried out a number of politically sensitive actions in recent years. These include the cancellation of a mode called Cops ‘n’ Crooks in Grand Theft Auto Online, and the removal of transgender jokes from the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V. The company has also significantly narrowed the gender pay gap.

Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in and around a fictional version of Miami. This happened after the game got bigger, as early designs aimed to include a large number of regions in North and South America. It was originally code-named Project Americas.

Rockstar now plans to keep updating Grand Theft Auto VI by adding new missions and cities on a regular basis. Leadership hopes this will reduce issues in the final months leading up to launch. Despite the reduced scope of the game, the world is still large and has more interior locations than any previous Grand Theft Auto game.

Industry analysts say Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to be released in Take-Two’s fiscal year 2024, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. However, sources say they have no firm release date and expect the game to take at least two years.
