The blood receives oxygen from the lungs. The lungs bring air into close contact with the oxygen-poor blood in the pulmonary capillaries.
The lungs are a delicate organ and can be affected. One of the major disease of the lungs is lung cancer. Research has shown that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. Lung cancer occurs when the cells of the lungs begins to duplicate abnormal. It is the distorted growth of lung cells.
People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer but it can also occur in people who have not smoked before. Lung cancer doesn’t have clear signs and symptoms in its early stage. It occurs when it gets to its advanced stage. Some general signs or symptoms of lung cancer include:
· Persistent cough that doesn’t go away.
· Coughing up blood.
· Chest pain.
· Loss of weight.
· Constant headache and bone pain.
· Shortness of breath.
· Shoulder pain.
· Difficulty swallowing.
· Infections like pneumonia.
There certain things that increase your chances of developing lung cancer. Those things are called risk factors. Some of the risk factors for lung cancer include:
· Exposure to radon gas.
· Exposure to carcinogens.
· Family history of lungs cancer.
· Previous radiation therapy.
Your lifestyle and diet plays a great role in your development of lung cancer. What you eat or do on daily basis can either increase your risk or reduce your risk of developing other complicated healthy conditions. There are some things that can cause or increase your risk for lung cancer when you take them too much. Some of them include:
The smoking of tobacco is the leading and major cause of lung cancer. Most death cases due to lung cancer are traced to smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking is very dangerous and it can cause a serious damage to your health. Aside lung cancer, smoking can damage both the liver and the kidney. The smoke from it can cause oxidative stress on the liver hence avoid it.
2. Foods high in saturated fats
Foods high in saturated fats such as fried chips, pizza, and other processed foods can also cause a serious harm to the lungs when you take then excessively. Research has linked saturated fat intake with an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers. Saturated fats can also raise your blood pressure thus contributing to other heart disease hence avoid it.
3. Refined carbohydrates
Research has shown that the simple sugars in carbohydrates can increase the body’s blood sugar levels and can lead to hormonal changes that can trigger chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation with time can lead to cancer. When you consume high sugar diet, it increases your risk for lung cancer. Please go for whole grain breads, brown rice, fruits and vegetables when choosing carbohydrates.
There are no sure ways to prevent lung cancer but there are certain things you can do that will reduce your risk of developing them. There include:
1. Don’t smoke.
2. Avoid secondhand smoke. Avoid polluted areas and don’t stay near people who smoke.
3. Test your home for radon.
4. Avoid carcinogens at work.
5. Eat a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables.
6. Always engage in frequent exercise.
