A sickening video shows a convicted sex offender buying treats for two schoolgirls at a local shop before “raping and killing them”.

Ulyana Degtyar and Anastasia Fesler, both ten, met the man on the way home from school in Kiselyovsk, a town in the Russian region of Kemerovo.

Viktor Pesternikov, 41, was previously convicted for ten years for paedophile offences, say Russian law enforcement.

The part-time driver had been released from jail in 2019 and is said to be married with two teenage children, according to reports.

A saleswoman at the shop said the two girls had called him “Uncle Vitya”.

He was detained today and initially admitted on a police video buying the schoolgirls sweets and soft drinks before going with them to feed pigeons, but claimed they then parted.

Later he confessed to raping and suffocating them to death, say reports citing law enforcement officials.

Their bodies were found in an abandoned house.

In his first interrogation, he was asked: “Why did you buy sweets for the kids?”

He replied: “I just gave them a treat, they asked for sunflower seeds. I bought them soft drinks…

“They brought these when we went to feed the pigeons. Well, that’s it.“I left and they also went home.”

When the girls had disappeared yesterday a huge search started involving volunteer group Liza Alert which specialises in hunting for missing people.

Footage also showed the crime scene and the girls’ clothing.

The deeply distressing case has led to an immediate demand to end a decades-old moratorium on the use of the death penalty in Russia.

Deputy speaker of the Russian parliament Mikhail Yemelyanov said: “We believe that paedophile murderers and terrorists should face the death penalty.”

“Russia should ignore a ban on the death penalty by the Council of Europe,” he added.

“Such scoundrels must be executed. We will insist on this.”

He predicted a vote after this month’s elections.

Pesternikov was today held by the police pending further investigations.

He is expected to be remanded in custody for an initial two months following his confession.

When he was released from jail, he was initially under “active supervision” by police.

He had been jailed previously for “violent acts of a sexual nature against a minor”.
