Born in East London, England, Tovey started his musical career with the Salvation Army Band. He started playing tuba and piano before he started conducting. He is responsible for orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Tovey was reportedly diagnosed with a type of sarcoma in May 2019 and underwent surgery at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston in June 2021, which temporarily cured his cancer. Cancer returned in January.

The orchestra’s executive director David Bochesner said: “Our hearts are broken. Bramwell Tovey was a beloved friend and colleague who was talented, warm, friendly, humorous, and honest.”
