Farouk Lawan was elected for a third term in office in 2007. He led the integrity group of the Federal House of Representatives during the corruption scandal that caused the resignation of former Speaker of the House of Representatives Patricia Etteh.
In 2011, Farouk Lawan was elected for a fourth term in office. He was the chairman of the House of Representatives committee that investigated the Nigerian government’s fuel subsidies.
Controversies and Imprisonment
Farouk Lawan was charged to court for allegedly accepting $500,000 from Femi Otedola, a Nigerian billionaire oil tycoon in February 2013.
According to reports, Farouk Lawan solicited for $3 million bribe from Otedola to have his company, Zenon, removed from the list of companies that the committee had implicated in the scandal.
In June 2021, Farouk Lawan was sentenced to seven years in prison by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
