How was Tyre Nichols killed?
Tyre Nichols was a 29-year-old man who died on January 10, 2023, three days after a traffic stop by five Memphis Police Department officers on January 7, 2023.
According to preliminary results of an autopsy commissioned by attorneys for his family, Nichols suffered “extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.”
The five Memphis officers charged in Nichols’ death are Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith.
Why was Tyre Nichols attacked?
Mr Nichols, a black man, was stopped by five officers, who are also black, on his way home after taking photos of a sunset at a local park, an attorney for the family said.
He was pulled over for alleged reckless driving, at which point the first confrontation occurred.
Five ex-police officers have been charged with second-degree murder after a man died following a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee.
The officers, who are all black, also face charges of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.
