A Diet for Patients with Kidney Failure
According to healthline, if a patient with renal failure decides to undergo dialysis, his or her diet must be adjusted accordingly. On the advice of the doctor, the intake of potassium, phosphorus, water and sodium should be limited.
Restriction of water intake
When undergoing dialysis, the body can accumulate excessive amounts of water, which can cause increased blood pressure, swelling (edema), and breathing difficulties. For this reason, patients with kidney failure who need dialysis should limit their fluid intake.
Avoid eating foods with potassium
Potassium is found in many foods and is required by the body for muscle function. When large amounts of potassium accumulate, a complication called hyperkalemia can occur, increasing the risk of heart attack. Patients should discuss with their doctor how much potassium is acceptable and which foods should be avoided.
Avoid foods containing phosphorus
Excess phosphorus can also build up during dialysis, which can cause bone disease and lead to fractures. As a result, the individual should consult with his or her doctor about the amount of phosphorus-containing foods to consume. Foods high in phosphorus include wholemeal bread, nuts, and seeds.
Limit your sodium intake
When the kidneys are not functioning properly, sodium also accumulates in large amounts, which can lead to increased blood pressure. Foods high in sodium include table salt, undercooked foods, commercial sauces, and canned foods.
