Who was Gangubai Kathiawadi?
Gangubai Kathiawadi was born as Gangubai Harjivandas. She belongs to an attorney’s family and also teachers with connections to the local royalty in Kathiawar, Gujrat. She was an adult girl when she was a young girl when she eloped with an accountant who worked for her father to her dream city, Mumbai as she wanted to become a heroine. She ran away with her lover, Ramnik Lal to start a new life with him as he promised her that he would make her big heroin and would get her work in the films.
They both reached Mumbai and her lover took her to a brothel and sold her out there for 1000 rupees. There, she suffered from lots of trouble initially but she decided to become one of the most covetable commercial sex workers in Kamathipura, instead of becoming a victim of the circumstance. She successfully managed to do so and fought for the rights of prostitutes. In the year 2008, she died from a cardiac arrest inside her Kamathipura home after almost five decades since she came to Mumbai. She was 68 or 69 years old at the time of her death.

As per the chapter of Gangubai written in Hussain Zaidi’s book on Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Gangubai was one of the prominent names of the red light area that is called Kamathipura. she was not only a prostitute but she has relation with many underworld mafia people who were her customers. In the 1960s Karim Lala was one of the powerful Mafia faces of the city and used to dominate the underworld along with Haji Mastan and Varadarajan. Meanwhile, the red light area in which Gangubai lived, was under control in Karim.
Once Gangubai went to Karim Lala for asking justice for an incident. according to the book she was raped by one of the members of Karim’s gang and she took the plea of Justice to Karim Lala. Karim listened to her and gave justice to her. later on, she made Karim her brother. their relationship grew more and more strength over time. after her alliance with Karim Lala, Gangu rule over Kamathipura but never used her power to exploit young girls and women or forcefully led them into prostitution.
