Early life and education
Rodriguez, the only son and eldest child of Cuban parents, was born in Newark, New Jersey. His parents were Rawedia Mara Rodrguez and docker Narciso Rodrguez Sanchez II. The Canary Islands is where his grandfather was born.
He graduated from the modest Catholic St. Cecilias High School in New Jersey in 1979.
While living in New York City, he attended Parsons New School of Design, New School’s art and design school. Narciso’s parents opposed his entry into the fashion industry.
Rodriguez worked as a freelance designer in New York before becoming the womenswear design director for the brand Anne Klein and later for Calvin Klein. After leaving Anne Klein, Rodriguez worked for Calvin Klein. In 1996, he designed the wedding dress for fellow Calvin Klein employee Carolyn Bessette for her wedding to John F.
