A crash on Monday during a spring snowstorm in Pennsylvania involved 50 to 60 vehicles and injured several people, officials said.

A portion of Interstate 81, about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia, is closed until further notice, and at least 20 people have been taken to local hospitals, according to the Shulkier County Emergency Management Department.

Fire brigade, state police and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation employees responded to the scene between exits 116 and 119.

Pennsylvania State Police said a fire involving multiple vehicles was burning. Emergency services have not confirmed the death toll.

It’s unclear what caused the buildup in the first place, but it appears that poor visibility from late-season snowstorms was a contributing factor.
