Illegal Hamilton Play By Texas Church Called Out By Lin-Manuel Miranda

Lin-Manuel Miranda applauds the lawyer who got work done after staging an ‘illegal, unauthorized’ ‘Hamilton’ production at a Texas church.

The producer of the hit Broadway musical takes issue with The Door Christian Fellowship Ministries in McAllen, Texas, which ran the show August 5-6 without permission, changed the lyrics, and added Edited text to include biblical references and anti-LGBTQ unlicensed speech.

“Thank you to everyone who has reached out to help with this illegal, unauthorized production. Now the lawyers are doing their jobs,” Miranda tweeted on Wednesday. “And forever grateful to @dramatistsguild, whether it’s your first drama or your fiftieth, they have writers behind them.”

Miranda, who created the Tony Award smash “Hamilton” and starred on Broadway, also retweeted a statement from the Dramatists Guild, an organization representing playwrights, composers, and lyricists, which read: “The Dramatists Guild Condemned Door McCarran Church Unlicensed production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s seminal musical “Hamilton” on August 5 and August 6, 2022, in McAllen, TX. Except for unauthorized performances, In addition, Door McAllen Church also altered lyrics and added text without authorization.”

The statement continued: “We raise the blatant infringement of McCarran Gate Church to expose the problematic pattern of some theatre organizations performing author work without authorization and rewriting text without author consent. Any Organizations, professional, amateur, or religious, are not subject to these laws. The work of any writer, whether a student who just finished writing his first play or Lin-Manuel Miranda, may not be published in Perform without their permission. No changes to lyrics, lyrics, or annotations are allowed without their express consent.”

After the revised version at Door McCarran Church gained attention, a Christian church pastor countered that the musical’s creative team had given the church permission to perform. However, Sean Marshall Brown, a spokesman for ‘Hamilton’, denied the claims, saying in a statement that ”Hamilton’ has granted no amateur or professional license to any stage production, nor has it been granted to Door Church.”

Brown added that attorneys representing “Hamilton” issued a cease and desist letter over the unauthorized use of “Hamilton”‘s intellectual property, requesting the immediate removal of all previously produced videos and images from the Internet, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, their own website and elsewhere. ”

The producers of “Hamilton” stated that the church can proceed if: “a) it is not live or recorded; b) no photos or videos of the performance are released; c) they do not install any further products; d ) This limited license is unbiased and we reserve all rights and remedies; e) We will discuss the matter with the parties behind this unauthorized production in the coming days once all facts have been duly reviewed. ”

The statement concluded: “The Hamilton family stands for tolerance, compassion, inclusion, and of course LGBTQ+ rights. We are reviewing unauthorized changes to the script to determine further action. We would like to thank our loyal fans for bringing us to our attention. to this point.”
