Barry Jenkins is heading to Pride Rock. At D23, the acclaimed director of Moonlight took to the stage to officially announce Mustapha: The Lion King, a new prequel to the 2019 Lion King movie.
Originally announced in 2020 as a sequel to the 2019 film, “Mustafa” tells the origin story of Disney’s iconic villain, exploring the forces that turned him into a tragic power-hungry figure. In addition to announcing the title, a preview clip of the film was shown to the audience at the D23 Expo. The film’s release date has yet to be announced.
