Maruti is developing an E85 flex fuel engine, with E20 compliance expected by April 2023. According to Maruti Suzuki, work has begun on an E85-capable (85% ethanol) engine, although no information regarding its market introduction has been disclosed. By April of next year, the manufacturer’s model lineup will also be E20-compliant, primarily to meet the government’s mandate for the introduction of E20 fuel.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited CTO CV Raman stated during a media tour of the company’s R&D plant in Rohtak, “we will have E20 compliance by April of next year, but we are also building a flex-fuel engine capable of handling up to E85” Follow For More Updates at E85 flex fuel by Worldrapiddnews.com

Currently, petrol in India contains approximately 10 to 15 percent ethanol, but to increase the percentage to 20 to 25 percent, a few modifications are necessary, primarily to the rubber hoses and fuel system to handle the corrosive nature of the fuel, as well as a slight engine system recalibration. To reach higher mixes such as E85, additional changes are required, including a significant remapping of the ECU, injection, and ignition systems to accommodate the decreased calorific value and cold start capability.

“Fuel efficiency is crucial to us, and preserving it together with a lower calorific value will be a major priority,” Raman explained. He also stated that E85 engines are only BS4 compliant globally, therefore India could be the first market to receive an E85 BS6 engine. Therefore, he asserts, there is much work to be done here.

In addition to beginning work on electric vehicles and releasing its first model by 2025, Maruti is placing a significant emphasis on alternative fuels. Interestingly, in addition to the creation of ethanol fuel, the company is also studying bio-CNG, according to Raman.

While EVs will rise dramatically, the internal combustion engine is projected to remain, and its numbers will only increase as the market grows. Thus, according to Maruti, it is evident that cleaner internal combustion technology must also be developed alongside electric vehicles. E85 flex fuel

Flex-fuel future

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, feels that ethanol-blended fuel might be a viable option for India, just as it has been for decades in Brazil, where E20 and higher mixes have been utilised. In fact, this is quite conceivable, but a careful evaluation is required to ensure that crops for ethanol generation do not consume agricultural land intended for food production, a problem that currently exists in a few locations where ethanol fuel is popular.
