Parents of a woman who committed suicide have demanded that institutions provide greater care for their pupils. Natasha Abrahart, 20, committed suicide in April 2018 while in her second year at the University of Bristol. Parents Robert and Margaret Abrahart of Nottinghamshire has filed a civil lawsuit against the institution, alleging that it failed to accommodate her social anxiety disorder. The institution stated that it did all possible to help students who were experiencing mental health issues. On Friday, a decision in the case will be handed down. Check further details here.

Mrs. Abrahart, who lives in West Bridgford, said the couple was on pins and needles ahead of the decision. “For all the other students who are like Natasha, the decision is incredibly essential,” she said. “What matters to me is what occurs next.” It was pointless to pursue the lawsuit if nothing changed as a result of it. This needs to serve as a spur to get the university system to do something to ensure that its students are better cared for.” In February 2018, Miss Abrahart was diagnosed with persistent social anxiety while studying physics.

Under the Equality Act, Mr. and Mrs. Abrahart claimed that the university discriminated against her as a disabled student. Bristol County Court heard she suffered from “debilitating shyness” and did not attend laboratory interviews or oral evaluations as part of her course during the hearing earlier this year. She was scheduled to give a presentation in front of fellow students and faculty in a huge lecture hall on the day she was discovered dead. Since October 2016, a number of students at the university have committed suicide. The court also heard that the university’s disability services had changed since then.

Prior to the decision, Mr. Abrahart slammed the university administration for avoiding accountability. He said that they have spent four years bringing a court case to say this needs to get fixed instead of getting it fixed. Due to this, the university is getting secrecy and student blaming. Abrahart further said that there is no self-criticism and they are not accepting that there is any problem so they are not fixing it. They called it an insult to everybody as well as potentially dangerous to somebody like Natasha. The matter has become the topic of discussion among netizens on social media.
