The king is dead. Long live the king?

Nick Kyrgios won the U.S. Open with outright favoritism after beating defending champion Daniel Medvedev in New York on Monday afternoon.

The Australian reached the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time after beating the Russian 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Kyrgios now competes with No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov for a place in the semifinals.

Australian tennis superstar Todd Woodbridge said it was the best match he had ever seen Kyrgios play.

He called it a “major” victory, more important than all his victories on his way to the Wimbledon final this year.

His fourth-round blockbuster against Medvedev was expected to be one of the matches of this World Cup – and it brought a series of strange, wonderful and wild moments.

Kyrgios won the first set 13-11, saving three sets in a gripping tiebreaker.

However, when Kyrgios was sluggish and timid in the second set, the game was quickly tied.

Kyrgios showed a different man in the third set, smiling all over the place as he led 2-1.

In the third set, it became ridiculous when the 27-year-old had a moment of madness and fouled in a moment that shocked the tennis world.

In Medvedev’s first serve match, Kyrgios beat his opponent 30-30, and Medvedev’s shot bounced and landed off the pitch near the referee. Instead of letting the ball land on Medvedev’s own court, Kyrgios made a cross to the other side of the net, brazenly letting go of a mock spike.

The chair referee then took the point off Kyrgios due to a “foul shout”.

It might have been fun for some crowds, but it cost him a break point opportunity.

A bizarre moment in the heat of the battle has Australian tennis superstar Todd Woodbridge staggering.

“In all the time I’ve played tennis, I’ve never seen this happen,” he said on Channel 9.

“Oh, what a mistake. That should have been a breakpoint.”

“I still can’t believe it,” he continued.

Other tennis commentators were more severe.

Veteran journalist Ben Rosenberg tweeted: “Kyrgos just found the dumbest way to drop points I’ve ever seen, omg.”

US TV commentator Brad Gilbert wrote: “I’ve never seen it before. This is a break point for Cheerios Kyrgios”.

Tennis journalist Jose Morgado wrote: “What the hell did Kyrgios do at 30-30? Dear Lord”.

The mistake actually had a positive effect on Kyrgios’ mental state, and he went on to take the first set 6-3.

He even laughed while talking to his team after this point.

“Honestly, I think it’s legal,” he said.

Earlier, Kyrgios played some silky tennis minutes after losing his cool during a tirade against those sitting in his players box, including doubles teammate Tanasi Kokinakis and his daughter. Friend Kirsten Hazy.

“Tell me where to serve,” he snapped.

“Fuck it three times. Say something. Fuck it.”

The outburst has U.S. tennis commentators apologizing to viewers.

One TV commentator said: “The microphones in this place are so good, you’re going to hear a lot of curses tonight.”

“Sorry about that.”
