Hector County, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – A jury found an Odessa man guilty of two counts of sexually assaulting a child on Tuesday. Joel John Valdez, 27, was sentenced to life in prison on two counts on Wednesday morning.
During the trial, the then 16-year-old victim testified that they had sex with Valdez on multiple occasions while he was on probation for sexually assaulting another child. The victim believed Valdez was 18 and did not know he was actually a 24-year-old convicted sex offender. The teen only learned of Valdez’s past after police knocked on the door after his wife told authorities about the relationship.
Ector County District Attorney Dusty Gallivan said Valdez’s probation was also revoked — and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison as part of the revocation process.
Judge Tyron Lewis ordered Valdez’s life sentence to be served concurrently and ordered his probation to be revoked consecutively, meaning he must serve the 20 years he has already served before the life sentence begins. It took about 40 years for him to be eligible for parole.
