Long Island father shot, killed in upstate NY hotel lobby while visiting son at college
Paul Kutz, 53, a father of three from East Northport in Suffolk County on Long Island, was named as the victim who was slain in a shooting that took place over the weekend at a Marriott Hotel in Poughkeepsie. The incident took place on Saturday. On Tuesday, residents in the neighborhood spoke highly of Kutz’s abilities as a parent, and his family requested privacy and quiet as they struggled to come to terms with the unfathomable loss they have suffered.
Kutz was killed by a gunshot early on Sunday morning at Marist College, where he had been to see his son for Family Weekend. “When we came in, he was fast to come over and greet himself,” said neighbor Erik Jensen. “When we moved out, he was quick to come over and present himself.” “He was a wonderful person to have around.”
Those who knew the accountant and father of three children understood how much he treasured the time he could devote to his family. Jensen stated that he was never seen apart from his children. “They never failed to pass the time on the front lawn by playing ball. Can’t believe it.”
The shooting, according to the police, was completely random. During a brawl between two homeless men and hotel personnel, Kutz was standing in the lobby of a Courtyard Marriott not far from the campus when he was hit by gunfire. The fight occurred during the altercation.
Both 35-year-old Roy Johnson Jr. and 26-year-old Devin Taylor, who both have prior records of criminal activity, have been recognized as the suspects in this case.
Johnson is currently being investigated for possible involvement in a murder, while Taylor is being investigated for possible involvement in the possession of a weapon. A Glock and a ghost pistol, in addition to equipment and manuals for building bombs, were found, as reported by the police. It is yet unknown how long the suspects were staying at the hotel or whether or not they had any potential motivations for their actions.
“If any of these parents knew there were homeless known murder suspects at the hotel, none of them would’ve stayed there,” said Marist parent John Bucsek, whose hotel room was not far from the suspects. Bucsek’s hotel room was located not far from the culprits. “When you are a parent and you think about what may have caused this, it absolutely breaks your heart. What measures are being taken to avoid this from occurring?”
Officials from Marist have expressed their solidarity with the bereaved family as well as their most heartfelt sympathies in a statement. Both of the males are currently detained, and they are expected to appear in Poughkeepsie Town Court on Friday.
