Happy Monday legend Paul Ryder died on the day the band was due to play at the Sunderland Kubix festival.

The band responsible for indie songs like Step On was supposed to be one of the last performances on stage at the Herrington Park event, but early Friday afternoon a post appeared on Kubixโ€™s Facebook page informing fans that they would no longer be playing.

It read: โ€œThe bandโ€™s agency has informed us that due to unforeseen circumstances, Happy Mondays will not be able to perform tonight.โ€ Initially, the news caused some frustration among fans who had been looking forward to seeing the idols. During the Sunderland game, it quickly turned to sadness when it was announced that frontman Seanโ€™s brother Paul, 58, had died.

His death was announced on the Happy Mondays Facebook page. The band wrote: โ€œThe Ryder family and the members of Happy Monday are deeply saddened and shocked to announce the passing of Paul Ryder this morning.

โ€œA true pioneer and legend. He will always be missed. Thank you for respecting everyoneโ€™s privacy at this time.

โ€œLong live his fear.โ€

Kubix was quick to share the article on her own page, adding: โ€œWe were all deeply saddened to hear of Paul Ryderโ€™s passing this morning, and we are with Ryder at this difficult time. The German family is together.โ€

The news was quickly welcomed by a flood of comments, with one fan responding: โ€œIโ€™ve been a Monday fan since the late โ€™80s, my thoughts are with the family and the band,โ€ another wrote, โ€ Sad timeโ€ฆall the band and Paulโ€™s family are thinkingโ€ฆhis music will always be there.โ€

Shows still scheduled for Friday at Kubix include Lightning Seeds, Undertones and Shed Seven.
