After years of conjecture from fans, the Scooby-Doo character Velma Dinkley has finally confirmed that she is a lesbian. Jinkies, the news is official. In addition to this, the eyeglasses-wearing super sleuth is going to acquire her very first formal love interest in the form of a new character named Coco Diablo in the most recent animated movie Trick or Treat, which was released on Tuesday.
Some scenes from the upcoming movie have been posted online, and they show the character Velma developing a crush on the elegant costume designer Coco. The crush appears to be mutual, as Coco refers to Velma as “the cute one,” and Velma calls Coco “the cute one.”
The decision was made2 years after James Gunn, the writer of the live-action Scooby-Doo films, revealed that he wrote Velma as “explicitly gay” before it was “watered down” by the studio and ultimately removed. The move comes 53 years after the character was first introduced in the Hanna-Barbera-produced cartoon back in 1969.
Fans were overjoyed that Velma’s sexuality was finally accepted and took to various forms of social media to express their happiness over the development. “Velma being gay is actually massive, we’re at a point in time when this major character, full of decades-old history and fans, gets to actually be a lesbian, and that’s just another part of her canon now!” “Velma being gay is actually massive, we’re at a point in time when this major character full of decades-old history and fans gets to actually be a lesbian Someone said on Twitter, “Sometimes we need to celebrate these successes,” and I couldn’t agree more.
Another user commented, “I never thought I’d live to witness the day when Velma is very clearly having queer thoughts on-screen,” and a third said, “I never thought I’d live to see the day when Velma is receiving her lesbian debut after five decades thank you.” Full Story
