The launch of the new Hyundai Elantra in India has been delayed in favor of the new Verna. The seventh-generation Elantra was unveiled internationally in 2020, and while its SUV counterpart, the Tucson, has just been introduced in India, the executive sedan has not yet been spotted. Our company sources have informed us that Hyundai is prioritizing the new Verna for our market, so this trend is likely to continue for some time. The automaker asserts that the new Verna will be significantly larger and more spacious than its predecessor and that it could therefore compete in both the midsize and executive sedan categories. New Verna will compete in both the midsize and executive segments.

The new Verna needed to increase in size because it will now serve a wider range of markets, including the United States, where buyers prefer large vehicles. Moreover, the added space will help it compete with midsize sedans such as the Honda City, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus. Hyundai believes that the upper variants of the Verna will eliminate the need for a separate executive sedan model due to its larger size, high levels of equipment, and increased power.

With only one model, the Skoda Octavia, this segment is nearly extinct in India. With Octavia’s price already exceeding Rs 30 lakh and the new Tucson’s price exceeding Rs 35 lakh, it is possible that the new Elantra will be priced out of the market. It is a risk Hyundai will only take after observing the reception of the new Verna’s higher-priced models. Hyundai Elantra

New Hyundai Verna: what we currently know

A couple of months ago, the next-generation Hyundai Verna (codename: BN7) was spotted undergoing testing in southern India. Heavy camouflage effectively concealed the design of the new model, but certain styling cues suggested that the new Verna’s design will be heavily influenced by the design of the new Elantra. It will adhere to the most recent ‘Sensual Sportiness’ design language with a wide grille that merges with the headlights.

Similar to previous Verna’s models, the spy photos suggested a fastback design with a tapered roof. It is anticipated that the rear of the new Verna will feature angular taillights, similar to those of the new Elantra. The new Verna is anticipated to come with an extensive list of features, including ADAS technology.

Hyundai could add Creta’s more potent 1.4-liter turbo-petrol engine to the new Verna for the Indian market. The new Verna is expected to continue offering 1.5-liter gasoline and diesel engines for the Indian market. Especially considering that both the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus have 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engines. Transmission options are likely to carry over unchanged, and a smaller turbo-petrol engine could be added later. The new sedan will likely make its global debut this year, and its India debut is anticipated for 2023.

New Hyundai Elantra details

The new Elantra features an eye-catching ‘Parametric Dynamics’ design theme with intriguing elements such as a cascading grille and T-shaped LED taillights. The new sedan is built on Hyundai’s K3 platform, which, according to the automaker, is lighter than the outgoing model. Moreover, the new Elantra is 56mm longer, 51mm lower, and 26mm wider, with a 20mm longer wheelbase, resulting in increased passenger space.

Internationally, the Elantra is equipped with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and for the first time, Hyundai is offering it with a hybrid powertrain – 1.6-liter turbo-petrol engine with a 32kW electric motor producing a combined 139 horsepower and 264 Newton-meters of torque. Hyundai introduced the Elantra N with a 276hp, 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine last year.
