1989-2014: Early life and career

Brian Michael Firkus was born on August 23, 1989 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is from a Native American family in Criwitz, Wisconsin, partly Ojibwe. His drag nickname was inspired by his violent stepfather, who called him “Trixie” when he appeared feminine. Her surname was inspired by her love of Mattel Barbies and children’s toys. Before choosing “Trixie Mattel,” he first thought about the name of his drag character Cupcake. At 15, he moved into his grandparents’ house. He learned how to play the guitar from his country music grandfather.

Firkus attended the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after graduating high school. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre and first encountered resistance in an Oriental Theatre performance that appeared on The Rocky Horror Show. He debuted as a drag actor at the LaCage NiteClub in Milwaukee, where he has since performed regularly.
