Virginia Ann Mary Barton was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on June 25, 1925, to parents Mary (née Cain) and Donald Barton. Her middle name is Mary. She moved with her family to Portland, Oregon, her father’s hometown, at a very young age. She grew up there. She was a member of the Patton family and the general’s niece. After earning a diploma from Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon, Barton moved to Los Angeles, California, to attend the University of Southern California. There, she worked as a nurse (USC).

Patton began experimenting with acting roles while still at USC. While in college, she wrote plays with screenwriter William C. DeMille. She made several film appearances as Ruth Dakin Bailey, wife of George Bailey’s brother Harry, before starring in Frank Capra’s “The Good Life” (1946). ). Her role in this film is rather small. Although Capra had no personal relationship with Patton, he hired her after hearing she read about the role and signed a contract with her.
