Kane Tanaka was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the world’s oldest verified alive person from the death of Chiyo Miyako on 22 July 2018 until her own death at the age of 119 years, 107 days.

She is the second-oldest verified person in the world and the oldest verified Japanese person.

Kane Tanaka was born in the southwestern Fukuoka region of Japan on January 2, 1903, the same year that the Wright brothers flew for the first time and Marie Curie became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize.

Tanaka, who resided in a nursing home and enjoyed board games, solving arithmetic problems, Pepsi, and chocolate, was in relatively good condition until recently.

Tanaka used to own and operate a noodle shop and a rice cake shop when she was younger. She married Hideo Tanaka in 1922 and had four children with him, as well as adopting a fifth.

She had intended to participate in the torch relay for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 in a wheelchair, but the pandemic prohibited her from doing so.

When she was named the oldest person alive in 2019 by Guinness World Records, she was asked about the time in her life when she was the happiest. “Right now,” she replied.

Her daily routine included a 6:00 a.m. wake-up and afternoons spent studying mathematics and practicing calligraphy, according to reports at the time.

Tanaka was born on the southern island of Kyushu on 2 January 1903 as Kane Ota, the third daughter, and seventh child of Kumayoshi and Kuma Ota in the town of Wajiro (now part of Higashi-ku, Fukuoka). She and her family believe that she was born on December 26, 1902, and that her parents put off completing the report for a week because they were worried about her survival after being born prematurely.
