Salt is one of the most common seasoning in the world of cooking , especially in Nigeria. It is put in almost everything we cook and eat.

It is especially added in large quantity in processed foods and junk foods the we see around us.

Salt is a seasoning meant to give taste to our food. Although small amount of salt is essential for the normal physiological functioning of the human body, humans only need very little amount.

Salt also helps balance our fluid levels, helps our nerves transmit impulses, and enables our muscles to contract and relax, but the emphasis placed on this is that it must be in very small quantity.

The thought that since salt is a natural substance so it should be healthy is wrong. While salt is found naturally in many foods, salt is added, to unnatural levels, in many of the foods we eat, especially processed foods and fast food.

So people with the following medical conditions should stay clear off salt in their diet.

1) High blood pressure ( Hypertension).

High blood pressure means the pressure of your blood in your arteries is above the normal range. This is usually above 140/90.

Salt is mostly sodium, a mineral that occurs naturally in foods. Sodium is the substance that may cause your blood pressure to increase.

This happens because as you eat too much salt, which contains sodium, your body holds extra water to wash the salt from your body. In some people, this may cause blood pressure to rise. The added water puts stress on your heart and blood vessels.

2) Asthma.

Asthma is a common medical condition that affects the lungs and leads to difficulty in breathing during attacks. Anyone can get asthma, but people with a family history of allergy, asthma or eczema are at greater risk.

The environment, cigarette smoke and viral infections can also contribute to the risk of getting asthma.

Studies have also shown that a high salt diet can aggravate symptoms of asthma and salt is thought to contribute to physiological deterioration and morbidity in asthmatic men.

So if your child or anyone close to you suffers from asthma, reducing their salt intake may be beneficial in combination with the other treatments for asthma.

3) Diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.

Salt reduction is recommended for people with diabetes because keeping blood pressure in the healthy range helps to reduce the risk of the long term complications associated with diabetes.

So people with the above medical conditions should try as much as possible to avoid taking in salt for a better health.
