I Came To Cambodia Thinking I Was Coming For A Job, Actually They Was A Job But It Was Illegal”Etebu

According to a video on TVC News, on Sunday June 7, 2026, a Nigerian man identified as Emmanuel Etebu has revealed how he was deceived into travelling to Cambodia under the pretense of legitimate employment, only to find himself trapped in a foreign country with no money, no shelter, and no means of returning home.

Etebu, who has been stranded in Cambodia for several months, said he left Nigeria with the genuine belief that he was heading toward a promising job opportunity.

The promise, he said, turned out to be a carefully crafted lie that altered the course of his life.

In his words, Emmanuel Etebu said, “I came to Cambodia thinking I was coming for a job. Actually, it was a job. But we came here last year May. Through a job. And we came here. Unfortunately, the job was an illegal job,” he said.

Speaking further during the interview, Etebu explained that the so-called job was actually a telecom scam operation run by a Chinese company.

Victims, he said, were being defrauded of their hard-earned money. When he discovered the true nature of the work, he refused to participate. That decision, however, came at a heavy personal cost.

The company subsequently locked him up for approximately two months and demanded he pay the sum of six thousand dollars, claiming it was the cost of bringing him to Cambodia.

He was also subjected to electric shocks as a form of punishment and intimidation.

Since December, Etebu said he has been living on the streets, sleeping outside with no financial support.

He is now appealing to the Nigerian federal government and relevant authorities to assist him with a return ticket to Nigeria before a government-imposed deadline expires.
