Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent remarks have generated widespread reactions after he responded to a call by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security.
Atiku’s response was contained in a post shared on his official X account on June 3, 2026.
His comments followed a report by The Guardian stating that Archbishop Okoh had urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent action in response to the country’s worsening security challenges.
According to the CAN president, the organisation strongly condemned the ongoing incidents of killings, beheadings, torture, abductions, and forced displacement affecting innocent Nigerians. He called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security nationwide in order to address the crisis.
Reacting to the appeal, Atiku urged President Tinubu to pay attention to CAN’s concerns and take meaningful steps beyond public statements.
In his post, the former vice president said he was speaking on behalf of both the political opposition and Nigerians who believe their concerns have been overlooked. He called on the president to carefully consider the recommendations put forward by CAN and take decisive action in the interest of national security.
Following the publication of Atiku’s remarks, social media users expressed varying opinions, with many sharing their views on the ongoing security situation and the former vice president’s response.
